Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you wanted to know but were afraid to ask your financial advisor

Where does this data come from?

Our data is compiled from the World Bank, Federal Reserve Survey of Consumer Finances, US Census Bureau, and IRS statistics. We update our figures regularly to reflect the most current available data. No, we didn't just make these numbers up.

Should I use household or individual income?

Our calculator uses household income, which is the standard measure used by the Census Bureau and most economic studies. This includes all income earned by everyone in your household. If you're single, that's just you. If you're married, it's combined.

What counts toward net worth?

Net worth = Assets - Debts. Include your home equity, retirement accounts (401k, IRA), savings, investments, cars, and other assets. Then subtract mortgages, student loans, credit card debt, and other liabilities. That vintage beanie baby collection? Only if you can actually sell it.

Why is my global ranking so different from my US ranking?

Context is everything! The median global income is about $5,500/year, so most Americans are in the top 10-15% globally. But within the US, especially in expensive cities, that same income might feel modest. You can be globally wealthy and locally struggling for a one-bedroom apartment.

Is my data saved or shared?

Absolutely not. All calculations happen in your browser. We don't store, track, or share any of the numbers you enter. Your financial information stays completely private - we have no idea if you're secretly a millionaire or living paycheck to paycheck.

What income is considered "rich" in the US?

It depends who you ask! The top 10% of US households earn about $210,000+. The top 5% earn $350,000+. The top 1% earn $785,000+. But "rich" is subjective - someone making $200K in Manhattan might feel less wealthy than someone making $100K in rural Ohio.
